Agora –marketplace • Located below the Acropolis, center of city-state  • Debates, elections, shopping, & voting on laws happens here Acro means Highest; topmost • City –state – a city with its own government and was made up of town & surrounding area • Poliscity-state • Each polis was like an independent country. • Acropolis – the hill-top that a fort was on • Where temples were located • Where go when attacked (fortified)

Civic Participation= duties or activities of people in their town, city, or local area Rights: male citizens • Vote • Hold office • Own property • Defend self in court Responsibilities: • Serve in government • Fight for their polis as a citizen soldier Citizenship: only free, land-owning men, born in the polis
