  2. Concepts under discussion • Duality of man: a social being as well as a physical being; • Human history of development can be viewed as a process of soul-&-flesh conflicts; • Language is a mirror of the thoughts and feelings of the user; how one speaks reflects one’s preference, value judgment, and one’s attitude towards man and nature in general.

  3. 4. Evaluative language reflects results of mental activities and is abstract in nature; descriptive language reflects the results of human perception through the five sense organs and therefore is concrete in nature.5. Language is a carrier of culture.6. The meaning of language is affected by the linguistic context---situation: when, where, towhom, inwhat way, andfor what purpose it is used.

  4. Philosophical Considerations 1.Aesthetics, (美学)the study of the nature of beauty in the fine arts, is part of philosophy (“love of wisdom”, the rational and critical inquiry into basic principles), which includes other parts as: 2.Metaphysics,(玄学)the investigation of ultimate reality 3.Epistemology,(认识论)the study of the origins, validity, and limits of knowledge 4.Ethics,(伦理学)the study of the nature of morality and judgment

  5. What is aesthetics? 1.Branch of philosophy concerned with the essence and perception of beauty and ugliness 2.Psychology of art concerned with human responses to color, sound, line, form, and words and with the ways in which the emotions condition such responses 3.Criticism to particular works of art, by analyzing their structures, meanings, and problems, comparing them with other works, and evaluating them
