  5. Objectives • Describe the differences and similarities between the Berbers and the Arabs of Algeria • Compare and contrast rural and city life in Algeria

  6. Journal • 1/08/08 How do you adapt to the climate in your area? How do you change your schedule or your choice of clothing based on the weather?

  7. Journal • 1/09/09 Suppose that you were a member of a Berber Village assembly at the time that the Arabs first came to north Africa. Write a speech in which you discuss the possible impact of this change on your community

  8. Questions • Where do most Algerians live? • What is a typical Berber household like? • How do most people who live in Berber villages make their livings? • How have the Arabs influenced Berber life? • What are some features of Algerian cities?

  9. Compare and Contrast • Work in groups of four an make a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences between the Berbers and the Arabs of Algeria. We will use the diagrams as a basis for discussion of this section.

  10. Background • Arabic is the official language of Algeria an the language spoken by a majority of Algerians. It is also the main language throughout North Africa and Southwest Asia. Many Arabic dialects exist. Classical Arabic is the language of the Quran and is considered the ideal. It also is the language in which Arab achievements in science, religion, and literature have been preserved. Because Arabic has been so important in the spreading of Islamic culture, it is a vital link among all Arab countries.

  11. Travel Brochure • In groups of four, write and decorate a travel brochure for visitors to Algiers, the capital of Algeria. You may use both computers to research Algiers so you can advise visitors on appropriate clothing, historical sights, food, entertainment, transportation, etc.

  12. 9.2 Review • Identify souq, terrace, and Casbah • Identify Sahara, Berber, and Arab • How did the Berber way of life change when Arabs came to North Africa? • How are Arabs and Berbers similar today? • What differences might have caused conflicts between Berbers and Arabs? How did Berbers and Arabs sometimes overcome their differences?
