Event Recap: Take Your Mentor To School Day • AIM High mentors and students spent a day at our partner schools going to classes, speaking with administration, and planning for college. • A look at the schedule… • 8:55 – 9:15AM Advisory • Mentors Attend advisory session with mentee • 9:15 – 9:40AM Mentors attend half of 1st Period Class w/ students • 9:45 – 10:30AM Presentation from School Administration • Mentors, principal, college counselor, socio-emotional counselor, etc. Topics include: • Average GPAs, ACTs • School Curriculum • College Support • Socio-Emotional Support • Challenges Facing Students • Where Mentors Can Help College Match Activity… Mentors and students explored college options for students at www.collegeboard.com in hopes of finding great schools that matched student preferences.

  6. AIMing Higher • Seniors spent Dec. 28th together focusing on applications to More Selective schools • Greater selectivity Greater likelihood of graduation • Some students • Are not aiming high enough • Have safety schools that are too low • Focus on scholarships is next

  9. January 19th Cultural Event

Cultural Event- January 19th • Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 • 5:30pm: Students arrive • 5:30 –7:30pm: Students and mentors eat dinner • 6-8pm: Students and mentors play iwhirly ball in pre-assigned shifts • Dinner will be served in the party room at the venue. Mentors are encouraged to eat dinner with their mentees. • We have reserved two courts, and ten people my play on each court at one time. We will create a schedule for play time so that we utilize our play time efficiently.

  11. Getting There • Address: 1880 West Fullerton, Chicago, IL 60614 • There’s a small parking lot near the event location. Street parking is also available. • Transit: Fullerton is a stop on the red, brown, and purple line trains. Once at stop, take bus 74 towards Grand/Nordica. Two minute walk from this stop to 1880 West Fullerton.

  12. Registration • This is an event with limited tickets, so we ask you to register in advance. One mentor per student is guaranteed a ticket. Additional mentors are welcome on a first come, and are asked to submit a payment of $25. • Please ensure at least 1 mentor from your team registers. • Registration open now at www.companies-that-care.org/register. PleaseRegister by 1/15.

Mentors for 9th Graders (Class of 2018) • Beginning with Class of 2018, • will have two students per mentoring team • Reduces risk of “no-shows” • Easier for students to have a peer • each student will also have student mentors from high school seniors who will follow them while in college • Ideally, 9th graders will have same mentors as student mentor • If you are currently mentoring a senior, will you take on 9th graders? • Are there more people at your company who are interested in participating on mentoring teams? • Can you recommend mentors at other companies? • We need 15 teams

  17. Final Reminders • Register for WhirlyBall • Check with seniors about FAFSA completion • Recommend mentors for 9th graders
