  1. Elevator Ride

  2. Elevator Ride DownwardUpward V= V= Start a= a= (Less Weight)F= F= V= V= Middle a= 0 a= 0 (Constant) F= 0 F= 0 V= V= End a= a= (More weight)F= F=

  3. Apparent Weight The weight that is read off of the weighing scale is actually the normal force. When you push down on the scale, the springs get compressed and try to push back and that is moves the needle which gives your weight. This is the reason that your weight changes when going up or down the elevator, even though you do not change. Hence this is called the apparent weight.

  4. Elevator Ride DownwardUpward V= V= Start a= a= (Less Weight)F= F= V= V= Middle a= 0 a= 0 (Constant) F= 0 F= 0 V= V= End a= a= (More weight)F= F= FN FN Fg Fg FN FN Fg Fg FN FN Fg Fg

  5. Elevator Ride Downward V= Start a= (Less Weight)F= Here: Apparent weight is less. Net force is downwards. Fnet = Fg – FN ma = mg – FN Apparent weight = mg – ma = m(g – a) FN Fg

  6. Elevator Ride Downward V= Middle a= 0 (Same Weight)F= 0 Here: Apparent weight is same as the actual weight. Net force is Zero. Fnet = 0 = Fg – FN 0 = mg – FN Apparent weight = mg FN Fg

  7. Elevator Ride Upward V= End a= (More Weight)F= Here: Apparent weight is more. Net force is Upward. Fnet = FN – Fg ma = FN –mg Apparent weight = mg + ma = m(g + a) FN Fg
