  1. 3 SEPT 2014 BELL ACTIVITY: Take out your Quote of Arms Assignment Sheet, your shield and your paragraphs. Read the entire Assignment Sheet. Double check your shield to make sure it fits all the requirement. Then reread what you have written so far. Does it fit the requirements? What do you need to add? What needs to be rewritten? Today’s Agenda: Working on the Quote of Arms - briefly Policies and procedures Library Day Silent Sustained Reading

  2. What are Two-column notes? Two - column notes are set up so that you have a designated area for the facts and information you need to record, as well as an area in which to write your own comments, questions and noted connections to help you understand the concepts more clearly.

  3. STUDENT COMMENTS, CONNECTIONS & QUESTIONS Facts/information from the teacher WHEN? Take down facts/information While the teacher is talking/teaching When the teacher pauses and asks you to do so or after the lecture. Later, after you have reread your notes….at the end of class or while studying SUMMARY OF THE NOTES

  4. TRANSITION SLIDE • Instructions: • Take out a blank sheet of paper and a pen • 2. Fold your paper into thirds vertically. • 3. Now fold up 2 inches of paper horizontally from the bottom of the paper. • Draw a line along the bottom horizontal fold. • Draw a line using the first vertical fold, creating 2 columns. The left column will be narrow and the right column will be much wider. • Label your columns: • “C, C, ?” And “facts”

  5. ALWAYS LIST THE DATE AT THE TOP OF YOUR NOTES. AFTER YOUR DATE WRITE IN THE TITLE FOR TODAY’S NOTE’S AS: “7TH GRADE INDEPENDENT READING”

  6. Reading Logs: We are still working out the logistic but here is what you need to know….. There is not enough time in our classes to have you read 20 minutes a day, however, we know that kids who read 20 minutes a day outside of class are FAR, FAR more likely to be successful in life than those who read 5 minutes a day or not at all.

  7. INDEPENDENT READING: When you read a book which you have chosen. • In 7th grade your INDEPENDENT READING BOOKS will need to meet certain requirements: • must be in paragraph form….graphic novels will not be counted • must meet a certain reading level…..children’s books won’t be counted • must be a book…..magazines and websites will not be counted. • You cannot use a book you have read in the past.

  8. In 7th grade you will be expected to spend an average of 20 minutes a day in INDEPENDENT READING.

  9. ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT INDEPENDENT READING?

  10. LIBRARY BEHAVIOR • THERE ARE IMPORTANT REASONS WHY THOSE USING A LIBRARY SHOULD BE QUIET. • ORIGINALLY A PERSON DID NOT CHECK OUT A BOOK, BUT STAYED IN THE LIBRARY TO READ OR STUDY IT. THIS IS STILL TRUE IN THE SPECIAL BOOKS SECTION OF MOST COLLEGE OR MAJOR LIBRARIES. HYPERLINK TO Oreo

  11. IN “HARRY POTTER” AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE RESTRICTED SECTION OF THE LIBRARY. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwOrp6Q7kCE

  12. A MAJOR FUNCTION OF A LIBARY IS TO PROVIDE A QUIET PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO READ AND STUDY. HYPERLINK LIBRARY OREO

  13. TEAM DISCOVERY LIBRARY BEHAVIOR • BRING YOUR ID CARD – IT MAKES CHECKING OUT BOOKS SO MUCH FASTER. • IN THE LIBRARY YOU SHOULD NEVER SPEAK ABOVE A WHISPER. • IF YOU HAVE A BOOK TO RETURN DO THAT FIRST. • IF YOU HAVE A BOOK YOU ARE READING, SIT DOWN AS SOON AS WE GET THERE AND READ SILENTLY. • SIT AT THE TABLES CLOSEST TO THE CHECKOUT DESK, DON’T GO SIT IN THE FAR CORNER, HOPING I WON’T HEAR OR NOTICE YOU. THAT IS THE FASTEST WAY TO CATCH MY ATTENTION. • DO NOT VISIT OR HIDE IN THE STACKS. FIND A BOOK, CHECK IT OUT AND SIT DOWN TO READ. • IF YOU HAVE FINES, PAY THEM SO YOU CAN USE THE LIBRARY. • IF YOU CAN’T MEET THE BEHAVIOR REQUIREMENTS, I WILL HAVE TO LIMIT OUR USE OF THE LIBRARY.

  14. The Lowell Scott Library is too small, but it is all we have so we make it work. There are often 2 to 3 classes in the LSMS library at the same time and not everyone understands or follows these rules…. Lucky for you, my mom was a librarian.

  15. 3 SEPT 2014 LIBRARY DAYTAKE YOUR, ID CARD, AGENDA…EVERYONE MUST HAVE AN INDEPENDENT READING BOOK
