  2. Building an Empire • In 1799, Napoleon seizes power in France • Very popular general • By 1802, French people made him ruler for life • By 1812, he controlled most of Europe • Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium • Great Britain and Russia still opposed him

The Napoleonic Era • Napoleon ruled as a dictator • Named himself emperor • Reforms made him popular: • Napoleonic Code = laws that protected individual rights • Built schools, roads, canals • Promoted new business • Did not allow public questioning of his decisions • His quest for conquest was his undoing

  4. Napoleon’s Downfall • Knowing he couldn’t defeat Britain, Napoleon turned his attention to Russia • Invaded in 1812 • 600,000 French soldiers invaded Russia • Over 500,000 of them were killed, captured, or deserted • In 1814 Napoleonwas defeated and exiled on the island of Elba

  5. The Fate of Napoleon • In 1815, Napoleon escaped exile • Returned to power in France • At the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was defeated and exiled for life • Lasting impacts: • Napoleonic Code • Instituted the Metric System • Led to other revolutions in Europe
