  1. MIE/LCLS Management Organization John Arthur SLAC

  2. Who will do what • How will they work together

  3. LCLS Instrument MIE Project • MIE will build 4 instruments, and develop an advanced 2-d x-ray detector technology • Will build up in FY06, start construction in late FY07 • Will run through FY12 • TPC range = $50-60M

  4. LCLS • Will build an FEL x-ray source • XES group will build infrastructure for experiments • XES will build 1 instrument, and develop an advanced 2-d x-ray detector technology • XES will staff up in FY06, start construction in FY07 • Will run through mid-FY09, then enter operations phase

  7. Areas Where Coordination will Help • ES&H • Detectors • Science • Instrument design • Controls

  8. ES&H Coordination • XES group has responsibility for experiment safety design • Radiation Personnel Protection Systems (PPS) • Laser PPS • Designing safe lab areas • MIE has responsibility for communicating with outside scientists • Determine which user activities have safety concerns • Communicate SLAC safety culture to users • MIE and LCLS ES&H personnel will work closely together

  9. Detector Development • LCLS experiments need new detector technology • Dual development strategy for fast 2-d detectors • Several technologies look promising, no clear leader • LCLS will pursue one strategy • MIE will try a different technology • Both prototypes should be ready by 2009 • LCLS will hire a detector scientist to manage both efforts

  10. LCLS Detector Advisory Committee • Advises both LCLS and Instrument MIE • Independent experts (from Europe and Japan) • Held first meeting Feb 28 - March 1, 2005 • LDAC will continue to review MIE and LCLS detector R&D through yearly meetings, semiannual reports

  11. Science Coordination • Instrument MIE has a strong science component, plus strong links to LCLS science community • LCLS AMO scientist and Detector scientist will participate in science meetings sponsored by MIE

  12. Instrument design coordination • Instrument MIE will have a strong team of mechanical engineers, designers • LCLS will have good resources for x-ray optics

  13. Controls coordination • LCLS is developing a very strong controls group focused on experiment-source controls interactions • Instrument MIE will focus on experiment-specific controls, including data handling

  14. Key positions to fill • MIE Chief Engineer • MIE Scientists (3 right away) • LCLS AMO scientist • LCLS Detector scientist • LCLS Science advisor to XTOD group

  15. Coordination Risks + Mitigation • Major staff build up in FY06 for both MIE and XES • Get key people first • Get good project structure in place early • Overload on J. Arthur • Get good people in secondary management positions

  16. Summary • LCLS XES group and Instrument MIE will need to coordinate closely • Coordination is built into the structures and staffing plans of both groups • Success depends on creating good structures and recruiting good people • 2006 will be a crucial year
