  2. Greek Influence on RomePage 243 • Religion- Polytheism: the belief in many gods. The Greek gods and the Roman gods were the same, they just had different names • Architecture- Built amazing structures • Government- Roman Republic was based on Greek ideas of democracy • Education- Romans studied philosophy, mathematics, astronomy. Used these to improve and increase the Empire.

Architecture and TechnologyPage 244 • Romans developed the arch, a curved structure used as a support over an open space • Romans developed concrete, a mix of stone, sand, cement ,and water. • Romans developed the aqueduct, a structure that carried water over long distances. They went through mountains and over valleys. • The greatest architectural achievement in Rome was the Colosseum, an arena that held 50,000 people.

  7. The Roman Aqueductpage 245 • Began in the mountains at a spring • Water pressure carries the water • The aqueduct was built on a slope. Arches carry water high above ground • Water also ran under ground in trenches and tunnels (4 of every 5 miles) • Water channels directed the water to different public baths and fountains around the city.

  8. Roman Roads • “All roads lead to Rome” • Rome built roads to all parts of its empire • Allowed the military to travel quickly • Allowed trade to spread quickly and easily

Roman LawPage 246 • Roman Law was instituted across the empire • Emperor Justinian updated the Twelve Tables and created a code of Roman Law • Roman Law influenced civilizations for thousands of years including our own. * In the US, if there is a reasonable doubt about a person’s guilt, they must be found innocent in court. That is from the Justinian Code.
