Barber Learning Centre • 250,000 sq/ft of teaching and learning spaces • library, academic and technology units • Chapman Learning Commons • cafe, videoconferencing and meeting facilities • classrooms and lecture hall • research, writing and learning support programs • outreach and lifelong learning programs
Background • Physiotherapy Association of BC • 1750 members in public service and private practice around British Columbia • “voice of physiotherapy in British Columbia” • advocacy, lobbying and marketing support • online directory of physiotherapists in BC • newsletter and other member services • continuing education programs
Background • 2005 • draft proposal, meeting with funding agency • meeting with PABC to discuss partnership • position description and selection process • 2006 • Physiotherapy Outreach Librarian hired • project launched – February 2006
Physiotherapy Outreach Project • 3 year grant funded pilot project • outreach librarian… • provides instruction, research and information services to PABC members throughout BC • participates on PABC taskforces • develops print and online resources for continuing education • participates in UBC committees, reference work
Benefits to PABC • reference services – in-person, IM, email • PABC members introduced to new technologies such as blogs and RSS feeds • members are able to find quality information, faster and more [cost] effectively • customized small-group workshops
Benefits to Learning Centre • builds local expertise in using Web 2.0 tools for serving distance users • supports provincial outreach mandate of Learning Centre • builds positive profile of Learning Centre around province • provides experience in working with external partners
Elements of a successful partnership • shared planning • joint funding proposal • PABC input into librarian job description • PABC participation in hiring • shared management • good communication • physical and virtual (dual locations) • shared decision making
The future… • expand PABC access to licensed databases – eHLBC initiative • develop funding model for ongoing position – likely based at PABC • develop project evaluation report for funding agency
