Enhancing Access to Dental Care: Effective Programs and Initiatives for Children
This report delves into successful dental health initiatives in the Jicarilla Service Unit, focusing on on-site programs offering screenings and fluoride applications for young children. Key highlights include the establishment of a school-based dental clinic and a Teen Wellness Center that provides preventative services to students from grades 5 to 12. Additionally, open-access clinics permit patients aged 0 to 5 to receive care without appointments. Challenges faced, like WIC engagement and collaboration with well-child visits, are also discussed, along with solutions for better outreach and service expansion.

Not so much… • WIC: unable to establish a Dental Champion and get foot in door • Mailings- letters sent to homes of 1 and 2 year olds achieved minimal response • Well-Child Visits- Our Medical Clinic does not use a “Block-Style” to schedule Well-Child Appointments. Therefore, it was difficult to establish a collaboration that was productive.
