  2. Today we’re going to learn what Morphology is. Morphology is the study of the structure of words and how we can break them down into smaller chunks called morphemes. But first, let’s get to know each other. I want you to make me out of plasticine. You heard me. Make me. With your fingers.

  4. Most English vocabulary is created by sticking • existing words together to form new words… • Football • Netball • Postscript • Flowerpot • Postmodern • Recycle • Flower-garden • Bicycle

  5. Some of these are called compounds – where two chunks (morphemes) that can exist on their own (free morphemes) are joined together. • Football • Netball • Postscript • Flowerpot • Postmodern • Recycle • Flower-garden • Bicycle • Create two footballs with your plasticene now! + foot ball

  7. 4 of these words are comprised of free morphemes and 4 of these feature bound morphemes, meaning that they can’t be separated into independently ‘meaningful’ units. • Football • Netball • Postscript • Flowerpot • Postmodern • Recycle • Flower-garden • Bicycle Representation of a word featuring a bound morpheme Try splitting them into nouns. 2 nouns usually = compounds

  9. post-,re- and by- are prefixes. There are 57 common prefixes in English, including dis-, un-, mal-, mega-, auto-, trans-, ex-, semi- What do each of them mean? Write out a couple of examples of words featuring each prefix and try to work it out.

  10. Can we affix it? Yes we can! Affixes appear at the ends of words and will be covered in more detail in Part 2, but they include, -s -ed -ly -hood -ing -ocracy -ship -ese and loads more!

  12. So… ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM Longest word in the dictionary? Well, yes. It is one word. But how many morphemes is it made up of?
