  1. PCC OpCo OCLC Update May 2008 Robert Bremer Cynthia Whitacre

  2. Topics • Batchload update • Authority record processing • MARC update • 029 field • Parallel records • Other questions?

  3. Is anything getting processed? • Quantity continues to increase:

  4. But, the queue continues to grow • About 350 “in process” projects • Over half: OCLC waiting on files or waiting for user response • Loading from RLG is complete, but libraries that opted not to send records from RLIN are sending from their ILS – that is still ongoing • WorldCat Local has significantly increased demand

  5. How is OCLC addressing? • Dataload Enhancement Project • Large Development effort • Over and above regular Batchloading – have to keep the machine running • Currently 10 subprojects in process • Goals: • Get more bibliographic and holdings data in faster • Allow users to track progress

  6. Dataload Enhancement Program Efforts also underway to streamline current processing Remove validation constraints Allow MARC fill character in fixed field

  7. Dataload Enhancement Program (Cont) Phase I – Beginning July 2008 Automation Tools Access to new staff interface View character set analysis results Transfer repaired data to existing workflow Perform MARC field analysis and view results View validation results and invoke change services Expected Outcome – Improved database analyst workflows

  8. Authority Record Processing • Macro-based conversion projects: • Conversion of pound sign to musical sharp (Completed) • Conversion of superscript zero to degree sign (Completed) • Addition of non-Latin cross-references (Pending) • Removal of unnecessary terminal periods (Underway) • Addition of 043 and 781 to geographic name records (To Be Resumed)

  9. MARC Update : Installed now through July • Contents: MARC Update No. 7 (October 2006) and updates to MARC code lists since April 2007. Highlights: • New Authority 034 field and some new subfields in the Bibliographic 034. • Second indicator and subfield $2 defined for Bibliographic 047, which is changing to Repeatable (to accommodate non-MARC codes). • Relator terms subfield $j defined for X11 fields in Bibliographic and Authority formats. • Some changes to Bibliographic 506. • Subfield $u defined for Bibliographic 852.

  10. 029 field • Control number from another system. • Many being added to WorldCat as the result of vendor loads. • Reason: To facilitate future replacement of vendor records with updates from those vendors. • OCLC is not currently maintaining them in a systematic way. If upgrading records, you do not need to retain these. We hope they will be helpful in the future, but they are not actively used now.

  11. Parallel Records • Records that represent the same manifestation, but are cataloged in different languages: Permissible duplicates • If a record is cataloged in a language other than that used by your library (indicated by language of cataloging recorded in 040 ‡b), you may create a parallel record for the same item in your own language of descriptive cataloging. Only one record per language is allowed for each title. For more information on parallel records, see BFAS chapter 3, " Special Cataloging Guidelines.“ • This “interim policy” is in place indefinitely.

  12. Any other questions? • Please contact us at any time with questions.
