  2. Symbols • Broadly speaking symbols are observable, physical realities that represent invisible qualities or elements. • P. 25

  3. Signs An object that represents something else. They have only 1 meaning

  4. 3 Characteristics of Symbols • Symbols have more than one meaning • What symbols stand for is connected to what they are. We do not impose meaning on symbols • Symbols evoke more than more than one kind of response.

  5. Cultural Symbols • It is tied to the situation that it is used in. They change over time . For example: long hair in the 1960s

  6. Universal Symbols • They are NOT tied to a specific situationn, group or place • For example: fire, water

  7. Literal vs. Symbolic • Literal thinking involves considering things at face value • Symbolic thinking involves seeing tings at a deeper level
