2. Seeds begin in flowers. Pollen lands on the stigma and goes through the pistil. Pollen makes seeds in the ovum of the flower.

3. Seeds grow inside the ovum of the flower. A fruit or pod grows around the seed to protect it. When the fruit or pod ripens it breaks open and the seeds are ready to become new plants.

4. Seeds are scattered. Seeds can fall to the ground by the plant they come from and make a new plant. Wind can carry seeds to other places. Animals can carry seeds in their mouth or on their fur. Seeds can travel in water such as streams, rivers, or lakes.

5. Seeds need many things to grow. Seeds are protected by a seed coat and have food for the plant to use as it begins to grow. Seeds need soil to grow. When it has roots the new plant will need nutrients from the soil. Seeds need rain to soften the seed coat and provide food. Seeds need sun to warm the earth, and later to help leaves make food.

6. Seeds grow into plants. The plant breaks out of the seed coat and sends roots into the soil. The plant sends a shoot up the soil’s surface. Green leaves grow up from the shoot toward the sun. Buds appear on the plant, and then bloom into flowers. The flowers make pollen and new seeds form.
