A Western-Dominated World. The new imperialism. European imperialism did not start before the 1800’s. Imperialism is domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. Industrial revolution helps strengthen Europe .

The new imperialism • European imperialism did not start before the 1800’s. • Imperialism is domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. • Industrial revolution helps strengthen Europe . • Between 1870 and 1914 most of the world was under the control of Europe.

  3. Motives of the new Imperialists • Manufactures looked for natural resources world wide; such as rubber, petroleum, manganese for steel and palm oil for machinery. • Wanted to expand market world wide. • They needed steam-powered and naval ships were needed for transportation of supplies around the world. • Missionaries, doctors, and colonial officials believed they had the duty to spread what they saw as the blessings of western civilization; such as medicine, law, and Christian religion.

Motives of the new Imperialists • Growing racial superiority • Many started taking on the theory of Social Darwinism. • Applied his beliefs to people and nations (survival of the fittest) • European thought they were superior. • wanted destruction of other races to improve the human race. • Millions of non-westerners lost their heritage.

  5. Down the Barrel of a gun • Newer African states had no power over the westerns. • Europe: strong economies, government and armies/navies. • more medicine knowledge and new machinery. • Maxim machine guns, repeating rifles, and steam driven warships. • Africans and Asians tried to fight the westerns even their weapons could not compare.

  6. Forms of imperial control • France and Britain sent people to control the colonies. • France-direct/ Britian-indirect • Protectorate – original local ruler
