  1. Tactical Exploitation System (TES) Global Broadcast Service Network Implementation Observations and Proposed Enhancements Part One: Controlling IP Multicast Flooding

  2. Observations on GBS Operations When configured for classified video operations, multicast packets flood entire low side network.Network Time Protocol is rendered useless with even moderate multicast packet load. The GPS becomes unreachable. Further research revealed all half duplex devices will stop functioning in multicast loaded networks. With just two concurrent multicast streams, all low side operations become noticeably degraded. These observations were first made at Ft Drum on DTES8.The same condition was determined from analysis of ISR issues 8164 (DTES8), 7454 (DTES2), and 8200 (FWD6)

  5. Understanding IP Multicast All classified video operations cause multicast packet flooding on the low side network. When an application wishes to join a multicast group, it sends an Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) join request to its default router. Since TES routers are not configured for multicast routing, this goes unanswered. The CSV switch is enabled for IGMP snooping (by default), and if the router would process IGMP, the switch could learn which of its ports have attached multicast receivers. Multicast operations succeed because all streams are currently present on all switch ports.Multicast routing needs to be enabled on the CSV router.

  7. Configuring IP Multicast The following has been tested in the OSF, and stops IP Multicast flooding: config terminal no mgcp no ip pim bidir-enable ip multicast-routing ip pim autorp listener interface FastEthernet0/0 ip pim sparse-mode exit no ip pim dm-fallback end The first two lines after config are just to remove two items that are in the default CSV router config. MGCP is Media Gateway Control Protocol, a VOIP mechanism. Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) bi-directional is for large scale many to many multicast environments.

  10. Proposed GBS Enhancement Operational systems also watch unclassified video feeds through GBS. These are not supplied through normal CSV network hardware, but are made available via an Ethernet connector on the side of the truck. An enhancement that is inexpensive and simple to implement is to provide unclassified multicast connectivity in the vicinity of the remote workstation. • Add an Ethernet cable from the black GBS switch to an unused media converter in the CSV. • Add a fiber pair from the MC to the RWS TFOCA egress. • Provide a new MC at the RWS end of the TFOCA cable. Operational systems have complained of the difficulty in getting the unclassified feeds to their operations area. This gives them access where they need it and maintains red/black optical isolation.
