  1. A Student’s Guide To The Internet By Taylor Kliewer, Block 2, November 7th, I.T 9 • “Energy Efficient Computer Use”

  2. 1. Internet Safety “Computer Security Signpost Shows Laptop Internet Safety”

  3. Internet Safety: Students should always be aware of the dangers online and know ways to protect themselves from them. You hear on the news all the time about teenagers having complications with the internet. Complications like giving away personal information, or have had unwanted pictures all over social media. These situations could have been prevented if someone had stopped them from pressing send. It is extremely important to teach these safety tips to today’s preteens. If they are taught about internet safety, before they are fully surrounded by the new possibilities of the internet, maybe they will better prepared for what is to come. Even though it is important to tell teenagers about how to be safe on the internet too, I feel like young teens will be more open to hearing what their advisors have to say. Sometimes, the internet can seem private, but the whole world, as well as the owners of social media companies, now have access to your “personal” information. “Thinking before you click”, is a common used phrase, and is completely, 100% true. The internet should only be helpful, not harmful. It needs to be use with caution, common sense, and responsibility.

  4. Five ways to be safe online: Here are some ways to keep you and your friends safe on the internet. • Before you have add someone on social media, make sure you know them personally. • Don’t give any private information away over the internet, especially if you haven’t met them face to face. • Check to see if an add, email, or offer is a fraud. For example, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • Actually read the Terms of Use before you click “agree”, so you know exactly what the website is about and the privacy options it has. • Make your password something that would be hard for others to guess, and don’t make it something private like your name or address. Woodrow Hartzog, “Resisting Terms of Use”

  5. 2. Ergonomics/ HEALTHY Computing “All About Ergonomics”, West Rehab Sports and Medicine

  6. Ergonomics: Ergonomics is the study of the conditions of a work environment and the effects they can have on a person. • Employees, as well as employers, should be more concerned about the topic of ergonomics, than anyone else. The reason for this is because these people are usually working in the same conditions, all day, for a long period of time. The employers should make it a priority to keep theirstaff in good working conditions, so that they can work easily and more effectively. The actual employees should do their part too, and contribute ideas to their boss on how to make their work area a much more ergonomic place. • There are consequences for people do not take the time to make sure their work environment is ergonomic. For example, if someone who works at a desk does not a comfortable chair, it could result in a sore back the next day. This is one of the many short term effects or consequences that they can have. A long term consequence would be back and spinalproblems later in the future. Another situation would be that that the computer screen is set up too close to where the person sits. A short term consequence would be headache, and a long term consequence would be having to get eye surgery or glasses.

  7. Ergonomics Continued: 1. The two types of desks are an office desk with a separate level for the keyboard, versus and regular, one-level desk. A desk with a keyboard level, or even a desk with a adjustable level, like the one in the picture, creates a very ergonomic way to work. If someone were to just have a desk that is little to no different than a table, it causes the person to lift up their elbows. This can create soreness in the shoulders and in the back, as well. It is very easy to type when the computer screen is at a good eye level, but also if your hands typing in a very natural position. The desk with a keyboard level receives 9/10 E.P., and the second desk receives 5/10 E.P. I gave the first desk a 9/10 for its great way to move it any way you would like, and how it provides a comfortable position for your arms as you type. The second desk got a 5/10 since there wasn’t a key quality that made it ergonomic, therefore being awkward to type and work on. 2. E.P= Ergonomic Points “The Smart Desk” “Great Table”

  8. 3. Intellectual Property/ File Sharing Intellectual Property- someone’s ideas, artwork, etc. that they created and have a right to own. “Peer to Peer File Sharing”, Counter Storm

  9. FileSharing: Legal Illegal According to some sources, file sharing is completely legal in Canada. In situations like emailing your mom a homework file and asking her to edit it for you, seems to be thought of as legal. After all, it is your work and you are aware that someone is looking at it. Another situation that is thought of as legal file sharing is watching videos on sites such as YouTube. This is because you are watching it just for yourself and the credit of who made the video is posted with it. Furthermore, there are some sources that say file sharing is strictly illegal. More specifically, they are directing that towards file sharing websites and acts of piracy. When someone downloads a file from YouTube or a website like “Rackspace.com”,it is illegal, and you can be fined for committing such an act. Additionally, if you sell a file that you downloaded online, as if you were the one who created it, is illegal as well.

  10. My opinion On File Sharing: • I believe that file sharing should be against the law in Canada for several reasons. First of all, “sharing” files online is like using something without asking permission, and is considered stealing. The author of the file deserves full credit for the hard work that they put into creating either a movie, document, or any other type of media. Emailing it to someone else should be illegal because the author did not specifically give you permission to do so. If everyone just downloaded media off the internet without paying for the product, artists and creators will loose a lot of money. Even for small things like emailing a homework file to your friend shouldn’t be allowed, because it brings up another issue, the possibility of plagiarism. Nick Mokey, “Music, Movie and Software Piracy”

  11. 4. Useful Websites For Students www.http “Computer”, Clip Art

  12. Check My Mark: This website is authoritative, not bias, because it you can trust that the information, (your grades) are true, since it came straight from your teacher. If it were a bias website, it would be strictly someone’s opinion. https://www.checkmymark.com/ “Check My Mark” is safe and secure website that allows students, as well as parents, access to grades and marks . It is also very helpful for teachers because it can be used for recording grades. After they have marked an assignment or a test, they can put the marks into that student’s private account. Then, it is available for only that student, or their parents to see on their computer or any mobile device. “Check my Mark”

  13. Chatter High: “Chatter High”, is an authoritative website. All of the questions are facts from university and other post secondary schools websites, therefore you know that the information is correct. A question will talk about one program, and to answer it, they provide a link to that program’s website. When you click on the link, you can see that their information matches up with the information on “Chatter High”. http://www.chatterhigh.com/ “Chatter High”is a Canadian website that lets students take educational quizzes about post- secondary options, in order to earn points. The questions lead you to different website pages that tell you more about college and university courses. This incredible cite allows students to look into their future and find courses they possibly would want to take. After you have completed a 10 question quiz, you earn points that you can enter in draws or donate to charities. This makes the learning process a lot more entertaining. “Chatter High”

  14. BcScience: “BcScience” is an authoritative website and it by the same people who published our science textbooks. Every page, lab, and definition that is in the textbook, is on this site. If the school district approves of teachers using the “BcScience” textbook and the online version is no different, you can be sure that the facts are all true. http://www.mcgrawhill.ca/bc-science/ “BcScience” is both useful for students and teachers. It is a whole website devoted to making your science class much more easier. It provides access to an e-textbook with the code from a teacher, videos that can be shown in class, and quizzes to help students prepare for upcoming tests. Every different unit has it’s own page with activities that go along with each sub- section. “BcScience”

  15. Quizlet: “Quizlet” is an authoritative site for it’s correct translations, unlike “Google Translate”. The already made sets of cue cards are very authentic and can be very useful for either school tests or just quizzing yourself. http://quizlet.com/ “Quizlet” is website that helps people make flashcards for tests and exams on different subjects, but more specifically language courses. All there is to do is enter in your English term on one line and it will translated it into another language on the other. The language that it is translated into can be selected. Some of the languages are Russian, Irish, Croatian, Chinese, and there are many more to choose from. Another option is to make your own set on your account. “Quizlet”

  16. Google Docs: It is difficult to label “Google Docs.”as either a bias or authoritative website, since it is an e-mail account. However if it were one of the two, it would be an authoritative website. It isn’t influenced by what a certain individual thinks, but it is reliable for keeping your information safe. https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin “Google Docs.” is a website that can e-mail others and create documents on any screen. If you create a presentation on “Google Docs.”, it can be accessed and printed on a different device. If a computer crashes or a homework assignment is accidently deleted, it can be stressful to try and re-do the assignment before the deadline. This website’s documents are always automatically saved for you onto your account. “Google Docs.”
