  2. Healthy Active Lifestyle • Objectives: • To be able to explain what it means to have a “healthy active lifestyle” • To identify reasons why you need to lead a healthy active lifestyle.

  3. Healthy Active Lifestyle • With a partner or in groups, jot down some ideas about what it means to have a healthy active lifestyle.

  4. Unhealthy Sedentary Lifestyle • Now, jot down ideas about what it means to have a unhealthy sedentary lifestyle.

  5. Unhealthy Sedentary Lifestyle • What are some of the consequences to having an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle? (Take volunteers from the class) • More people over the age of 35 die from being sedentary than from smoking. • New research shows that people that sit for 4 or more hours a day with little to no movement will die sooner than people who don’t. • Sedentary lifestyles can cause diabetes, depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and more…

  6. Healthy Active Lifestyle • What are some of the benefits to living a healthy active lifestyle? (Take volunteers from the class) • Some studies show that walking briskly for even one to two hours a week (15 to 20 minutes a day) starts to decrease the chances of having a heart attack or stroke, developing diabetes, or dying prematurely. • Being active releases endorphins that make you feel happy. • Being active lowers your stress level. • Exercise and eating right makes you feel energetic and less tired. • Setting goals and achieving them makes you feel really awesome about yourself. Exercise goals are an easy way to feel awesome!

Healthy Active Lifestyle • What moves you? • Beginning with your teacher, whip around the room saying what you do, or will do in the future, to get your heart rate up for 20 - 60 minutes a day. • Join the club! • There are also social benefits to being active! • Team sports and active clubs like dance club, intramurals and the BB Racers club help you get moving with other people which has EVEN MORE health benefits!!!!

BBRacers • The BB Racers club will get you active, get you playing with your friends, get you something to do when you are bored and best of all GET YOU TO BOULDER for the nations most popular 10k. • Who: Ms. Quinn, Ms. Bishop and YOU! • What: A club where we will run on the track, walk on the track, play games on the field, stay active and have FUN! Then, on memorial day, we will all take the RTD to Boulder to participate in the Bolder Boulder! (Do you want to do intramurals and still do the Bolder Boulder? Come see us for details! Do you play on a football/soccer/basketball team but still are interested? Come see us for details!) • When: The first practice is March 5th at 3:30. We will meet every Tues. and Thurs. after that. Listen for announcements! • Where: Room D111 right after school! • Why: The Bolder Boulder is one of the most amazingly fun things you will ever do in your life! Ask students who have participated for details, and if you don’t want to do the Bolder Boulder, you can still come hang with us on the track!
