  1. Class of 2015 Mt. Zion High School Freshman Orientation “Excellence without Excuses”

  2. Administrative Team Ms. Ross Assistant Principal Mr. Houze Assistant Principal Mrs. Stephens Assistant Principal Ms. Drewry Principal

  3. PURPOSE • The freshman year of high school has been documented as a pivotal time for students. It is during the freshman year that: • The highest dropout rates are recorded • Students are asked to make academic choices that either launch them along a trajectory toward college or some other form of post-secondary education, or potentially condemn them to a life of limited career choices • Students start making lifestyle choices that can either lead to a life of self-sufficiency or one of dependency (e.g., teen parenting, substance abuse, unemployment or under-employment, gang involvement)

  4. Mt. Zion High School Mission and Vision To combat these realities, Mt. Zion high school is committed to educating the whole child, we will provide them with opportunities and choices that will enable them to be competitive anywhere.

  5. Goal To help ninth grade students make a smooth and successful transition from middle school to high school.

  6. Middle School/High SchoolWhat is the Difference? • MS students move with a team and are escorted from class to class. HS students are not escorted to class and have 5 minutes to get between classes. • MS students walk in straight lines together. HS students may travel a distance and even change buildings. There is no straight line. • MS students are often “placed” due to age or other situations when requirements are not met. HS students are NOT PLACED. They must pass classes and have credits to move to next grade.

  7. Middle School/High SchoolWhat is the Difference? • MS teachers are taught to nurture the child through this developmental stage. HS teachers are trained to prepare students for college or post-secondary studies by being responsible for actions, lessons, etc. • MS students often finish homework at school and may not have to study every night. HS students have homework every night. They must study notes and read to keep up and be prepared for tests.

  8. How will Mt. Zion help your child succeed? • Ensure a safe, orderly environment conducive for learning. • Deliver concrete, engaging instructional lessons. • Communicate with students & parents.

  9. How can you help your child succeed in the 9th grade? • Become your child’s academic manager. • Make academics the 1st priority for your child. • Be an active participant in your child’s learning. • Communicate with your child’s teachers. • Get involved. (Become a part of the MZHS family)
