  1. Quantifying Material Microstructures with QuaternionsChristopher A. Schuh, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, DMR 0855402 To design new materials with exemplary properties, we must understand and control the microstructure—the crystal grains and the interfaces between them. Many important material properties—e.g. conductivity in p-Si solar cells, or resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in nuclear reactor steam generator tubing—depend upon not only the character of the interfaces, but also that of their intersections: triple junctions. We have developed the mathematical tools to extract information about the character of triple junctions in a material based only on the crystal orientations. These tools will allow us to manipulate the character of triple junctions by taking advantage of the known relationships between processing and crystal orientations. • Distribution of triple junction types in an experimental microstructure (above), the 6-D function required to describe the triple junction space (right)

Postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate students have all participated in this research. We also invite students and researchers from industry, from other US institutions, and from abroad, to visit MIT and participate in collaborative research.
