  1. The invisible man Quick-Write: • On the backside of the handout, write about a time where you felt unseen, neglected, forgotten…invisible. • What was the situation and who was involved? • Describe your experience using sensory details. • What were you feeling? What were you saying to yourself as you experienced this? • Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, etc. Write this like a journal entry. • You WILL NOT be forced to share this with the class, so be a raw and real as possible

  2. The invisible man: reading and annotating • As you read this prologue to the novel, please annotate for the following: • Diction • Syntax • Imagery • Tone • Any connections you personally made with the writing

  3. Ralph ellison • ON a separate sheet of paper titled, “Pre-Writing” answer the following questions briefly: • Who do you think Ralph Ellison is? • We know he is male, but how old do you think he is? • What time period do you think this was written? • Describe what you think he looks like (if you’re doing this at home—don’t cheat or you won’t get the full lesson!)? Face, hair, body, etc. • Rich or poor? • Educated or not? • What do you think his message is? How do you know that?

  4. Ralph ellison • On Google images, look up Ralph Ellison • How is he different from what you pictured? • Does knowing his appearance change your perception of the message in this excerpt? Why? How? Again, answer on the same separate sheet of paper titled, “Pre-Writing”

  5. Self-perception: the assignment • On another separate sheet of paper, and with the ideas discussed so far, write a “write-like” of your perception of YOURSELF. • DO NOT JUST USE THE FILL-IN-THE BLANK TEMPLATE UNDER THE PASSAGE!!! USE IT ONLY AS A GUIDELINE. • Organize the same as Ellison. Use about the same number of sentences. • Use the same diction, syntax, imagery, etc as Ellison, but use your own ideas. Just like the write-like we used for the “This is Water” piece. • You can type it, or write it on a sheet of notebook paper. • This is due in class Friday, January 11!!!!
