Technical Study Advisory Group • Name: Technical Study Advisory Group • Objectives: • To advise TTC for its activities directions and work efficiency by conducting studies and analyses of the world movements in telecommunications standardization, which lead to the improvement of TTC’s attractiveness as well as member fee effectiveness. Results (1) • Viewpoints of Objective Fields • Vertical Integration among Telecommunications (Mobile Communication System) and Service(Internet) , • Progressive activities in Ubiquitous computing-related forums, • Survival plan for Telecommunications (infrastructure) forums                      → conversion to high-speed networks and IP networks. • Service field : Decrease in EC-related forums; Increase in Internet-related, Multimedia- related and ITS-related forums • Viewpoints of Forums’ Activities Purpose The Number of forums is: • Increase in "Implementation specifics/interoperability" – expectation of substantial achievements in business rather than of establishing new standards and specifications, • Decrease in "de facto standards" , "Pre-standard" and "Others". Over the past 10 years: 2/3 have been covered by "Implementation specifics/ interoperability" and "Others". 3. Viewpoints of number of participating members • The forums whose categories were downgraded outnumbered the ones that were upgraded • EC-related and infrastructure-related forums continued to see declines • Multimedia, PC-related and mobile communications forums recorded notable increases • Careful selection of forums to join GSC-9, Seoul

Results (2) Background of the Forums’ Longevity • 7 forums, i.e. ATMF, GSMA, OMG, PCISIG, PCMCIA, TMF and ISOC, were selected as major representative from each objective field - telecommunications, information technology and service fields - for analysis • Telecommunications • Change its purpose from specifications development and maintenance • Raise its value in association with quasi-International Standard Organization • Information technology • Developing versatile technologies and generating common specifications, • Shortening the standardization time - keeping up with the market demand, • Acting coherently with the growing business/industry fields. • Service • Developing versatile technologies and generating common specifications, • Opening their windows to all users.
