Importance of the Paralympics • Given importance alongside Olympic games • Host city bids for both at the same time • Avenue for development of positive attitudes towards people with disabilities • Avenue for integration and inclusion of people with disabilities • Showcase for people with disabilities to show their ability • To give people with disabilities role models • Promote the ethics of inclusion in sporting society • Use the word Paralympic meaning parallel • Another opportunity to bring nations together

Gaining impetus • Legislation and policies have changes attitudes and social understanding • Public / voluntary bodies put provision for disabled sport in place • Improved classification system developed • Games now held at same venue • Takes advantage of facilities / technology / expertise • Equity now part of bidding process for games • Sports have been devised for disabled • More funding available • Games now used as a showcase for disability / role models
