  1. By Emily Small Sirius A and B  Van Maanen’s Star and Sirius B

  2. White Dwarfs (Degenerate Stars) • Burned up all of their gasses • No source of energy generation • Cool for the rest of eternity • Extremely dense • Very high temperatures • Cool and turn into a red dwarf and eventually a black dwarf • Thought that every white dwarf that ever existed is still visible in one way • Many are companion stars

  3. Van Maanen’s Star (Van Maanen 2) • Closest white dwarf that is not a companion star • Discovered by Adriaan Van Maanen in 1917 • Studying photos of Pisces the fish between 1914 and 1917 • Second white dwarf to be discovered • 26th closest star to our solar system • 14.1 light years away Van Maanen is the guy on the left

  4. Van Maanen’s Star Facts • Approximately .7 solar masses • One of the smallest stars known • Approximately 7,800 miles diameter. • Estimated average density of 1.2 tons/cubic cm • Can only be seen through a telescope • Visual magnitude of 12.38 • Is approximately 6000 degrees Kelvin • Has a density of 1.2 tons/centimeters cubed Van Maanen’s Star

  5. Sirius B (the Pup) • First white dwarf to be discovered • Travels in an elliptical orbit around Sirius A every 50 years • Has a magnitude of 8.44 • Is approximately 92% the size of Earth • Has approximately the same mass as the Sun • Average density of 1.7 metric tons per cubic centimeter • Approximately 19.8 au from Sirius A • Average temperature of 24800 degrees Kelvin • First photographed by scientists in the 1970’s Size of Sirius B compared to Earth

  6. Sirius B and Mythology • Not known to the western world until the mid 1800’s • Dogon tribe in Mali, Africa supposedly knew of its existence approximately 5000 years ago • Aliens called Nommos came to visit Earth and told of existence • Nommos also told of Sirius C, not known to the western world until 1995 • Dogons have artifacts of the Sirius star system dating before they were known to the western world. • Nommos told the Dogon things about our solar system that were unknown to the western world until Galileo made his telescope • Nommos also appear in myths of other ancient cultures • Egyptian goddes Isis, who is sometimes portrayed as a mermaid, is sometimes linked to Sirius The Nommos were supposed to look like Mermen. http://www.livevideo.com/video/UKUFO/42F8AF4AC9E146EEB23150DF7C7121DD/nasa-tether-incident-the-dogon-tribe-africa-.aspx
