What problems did German manufacturers face? 1818- 70Rhineland manufacturers complained about competition they faced from abroad especially Britain Prussian review of trading system reveals the use of 4,000 customs duties And 67 different tariffs within the territories SO ON 26th MAY THE PRUSSIAN CUSTOMS UNION IS CREATED

  3. What did this mean? Prussia abandoned her internal customs duties A low duty was placed on goods entering Prussia No tariff on RAW MARERIALS boosted Prussian industry

  4. Also…. A heavy tax was placed on goods entering Prussia from elsewhere The tariff was still low enough for the British to compete

  5. So who joined the Prussian Customs Union? Between 1819 and 1826 the small non-Prussian states within Prussian territory sought to enter the scheme States began to see the benefits of joining the Zollverein. Hesse-Darmstadt joined in Feb 1828 due to the problem of being cut off from the Prussian market

  6. Jan 1828 Bavaria made a commercial union with Wurtemburg Sept 1828 The Middle German Commercial Union was set up by over 8 states, including Hanover and Saxony Some states feared Prussian domination… Rival unions were set up… Logistics…economic pressure…revolution saw the Unions collapse

  7. By 1830 economic and revolutionary problems in states Such as Hesse-Cassel meant the MGCU had problems. This led them to join with Prussia Hanover proposed a general customs union for German states, but this was rejected by Prussia who benefited from the separate treaties By 1833 remaining Middle states such as Saxony had joined with Prussia

The ZOLLVEREIN comes into existence… • The Zollverein was a group of states that had agreed to abolish all customs duties between themselves • It led to the unification of currency and weights and measures • Roads, railways and postal systems were also extended and improved to enhance communications between the member states • It could negotiate with other European nations. For example, in 1844 a trade treaty was successfully negotiated with Belgium

  9. So how big was it? 1st Jan 1834: It covered 18 states 1836: 25 states and 26 million people
