Templates and Slide Masters • Templates • Ctrl + F1, or View -> Task Pane will show you the task pane on the right of your screen • In the drop down menu in the task pane, chose Slide Design • Here you are given a number of different templates which you can work with. • Standard IBC template is available in I-Find

  4. Templates and Slide Masters • Slide Masters • Click on View -> Master -> Slide Master • 2 types of master slides • One is for title pages and one for regular slides

Drawing • The Drawing toolbar • View -> Toolbars -> Drawing • Use the Grid from View -> Guides and Grids to help placement of drawings • Order -> Right click on image and select from “Order Menu” • Grouping -> Hold CTRL and click on the images you wish to group, right click on one of the images and select “Group” from the Grouping menu • Also, if you click on any image in a group, you can also ungroup them from the Grouping menu • Moving -> Drag cursor onto image and click when u see the 4-directional arrow. You may then move the image with your mouse • Sizing Text Box

Drawing • The Picture Toolbar • View -> Toolbars -> Picture • Alternatively you can right click on the picture and go to the picture tab • Toolbar gives you the options to insert a new picture and edit an existing one • Change contrast • Crop and resize a picture • In order to precisely reposition a picture, you would have to right click and use the “Format Autoshape” or “Format Picture” option

  7. Animations and Video • Three types of animation • Slide Design – Animation Schemes • Custom Animation • Slide Transition • For full slide animation, select Slide Design- Animation Schemes from the task pane • This will make all the items on the entire slide follow the given animation

  8. Animations and Video • For Slide Transition, select Slide Transition from the menu in the task pane • This feature animates the transition between slides • For Custom Animation • Using task pane on the right, select Slide Design – Custom Animation • Can be used on text and images

  9. Animations and Video • For Video • Obtain the video clip • If using a movie, use software such as VirtualDub (available at virtualdub.sourceforge.net) to rip smaller clips from chosen movie • Then chose Insert -> Movies and Sounds -> Movie from File • Playback and other options

Animations and Video • Using VirtualDub • Go to File->Open Video File to open the larger video clip • Use the mouse to move the scrollbar to the start of your clip • Hit the “Home” button or go to the Edit Menu and hit “Selection Start” • Then move the scrollbar to the end of the clip and hit “End” or go to the Edit menu and hit “End Selection • Use scrollbar for large navigation • Use Left and Right arrow keys for more accurate navigation to the second • You can also use Page Up and Page down for slightly larger jumps than arrow keys

  11. Animations and Video • Using VirtualDub • Once you have selected the clip you wish to extract, go to the File menu and choose “Save as AVI” or hit F7

  12. Using other objects • Go to Insert -> Object to select type of object • Some commonly used objects are: • Microsoft Equation 3.0 Objects • Excel Charts (first created in Excel) • Windows Media Player

Tips • Use the help option • PowerPoint is very powerful tool • Office Apps are well integrated, work well together • F5 and Shift + F5 are important hotkeys • F5 starts the presentation • Shift + F5 starts it from the current slide • For IBC presentations, use the provided IBC template • Feel free to contact me via FirstClass or regular UIUC e-mail at agjoshi@uiuc.edu with any questions and I will respond within 24 hours

  21. Microsoft Word tables in Excel • Transferring Word tables into Excel is as simple as cut and paste. • However, the formatting and table format of the word table carries over to Excel
