  4. Curriculum Overview - Reading • Reading Components: Read Aloud and Discussion Mini-lessons – Phonics and Comprehension Independent Reading Individual Conferences Small Group Work Intervention Groups

  5. Phonics Skills • Short Vowels • Blends and Digraphs (st, gl, tr, th, sh) • Long Vowel Patterns (ay, ee, magic e, oa) • Compound Words and Contractions (Sunday, can’t) • Synonyms and Antonyms (child, kid, ugly, dirty) • Homonyms (there, their)

  6. DECODING/Tricky Word Strategies • Break the word into pieces. • Skip the word, read to the period and go back to the word. • Read the sentence again. • Think about what make sense. • Look at the picture. • Look for a little word in the big word. • Try the long and short sound for the vowels.

  7. Comprehension Skills • Analyzing Story Elements • Comparing and Contrasting • Making Inferences and Finding Evidence to Confirm Thinking • Building and Applying Background Knowledge • Visualizing (Movie in Your Mind) • Determining Main Idea and Supporting Details

  8. Math Components • Computation Strategies – counting all, counting on, using known combinations • Minilessons (next slides) • Math Calendar – white binders

  9. Math Minilesson Concepts • Adding sums up to 18 and their corresponding subtraction facts • Memorizing combinations for numbers up to 10 • Telling time to the hour and half hour (minimum) • Recognizing and counting coins up to $1 • Counting up to and recognizing the place value of numbers less than 100 • Identifying fractions (halves, thirds, fourths)

  10. Math Minilesssons cont. • Creating repeating and growing patterns with numbers, colors, letters and shapes • Identifying 3 dimensional shapes • Creating and analyzing data using charts, Venn diagrams and graphs • Analyzing data and explaining results

  11. Homework • Nightly Reading – 2 books a night • Sight Words/Spelling Program Individualized – Practice Daily Colored Sheet – Learn to READ White Sheet – Learn to SPELL High Frequency Words Daily Assessment • Math Fluency Practice – games to practice their working number 3x a week

  12. Behavior Expectation • Be Safe – walking feet, hands to self • Be Respectful – listening, kindness, manners • Be Responsible – complete work, follow directions, use time wisely

  13. Birthdays/Unbirthdays • Send snack for the class with your child in the morning. • Please make them individual portions: no cakes or other items that need cutting. • Summer birthday – send in May • Email reminder to me

  14. Field Trips • October 28 – Junie B. Jones stage production at Samford • November 1 – American Village – Thanksgiving and early colonial life • April - In School Planting Day with 3rd graders • May - Hoover community helpers (library, fire station, police station, mayor’s office)

  15. SNACK • Snack Calendar • Snack choices – individual packs of crackers, pretzels or goldfish or individual packs of apple slices or grapes • Please place fresh fruit in small snack size ziplock bags • Other snacks will be sent back home

  16. Parent Conferences • Held twice a year – October and March • Review progress and areas of opportunity

  17. Reminders • P.E. is everyday – wear tennis shoes – please no crocs, sandals or dress shoes • The classroom can be cold – jacket/sweater • Book orders – send check only; one week window • Questions/concerns – email me at ssteinbeck@hoover.k12.al.us
