  4. How can the “Prince of Peace” not bring peace? (yes…this is a trick question) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

  6. Why is the “Prince of Peace” bringing a sword?

  7. Who, What, When, Where, Why? • Who? The Original 12 disciples (10:1-4) • What? Message of a Sword (10:34) • When? Sending the Disciples out (10:5-42) • Where? Towns and Villages: Jews only (10:5-6) • Why? Jesus Knew….(10:35-36)

  9. Therefore, peace “on earth” as defined as the absence of division or conflict is not what God had in mind…

(Old Testament) • Old Testament: Shalom • A condition of freedom from disturbance whether outwardly such as war or inwardly within the soul. • Common Greeting • Peace from enemies (implying prosperity) • Peace was the portion given to the righteous • A prominent feature of Messianic times

(New Testament) • New Testament: Eirene • Gospel is the message of “Eirene” from God • Should be cherished and followed by Christians • Fruit of the Spirit • Two formsof Peace • Objective/Inward: deals with your relationship with God • Subjective: deals with your life experiences

  14. Biblical Peace is given to those who know and follow Jesus Christ….To those who are “in” the world, but not “of” the world. (John 15:19)

Contrast of Peace The World Child of God • Mask the Problem • Will NEVER find Peace: focus is on circumstances. • Looking for peace • Escapism: introvert/extrovert • Shallow and unfulfilling • Can only find momentary tranquility • Peace based on circumstance does not exist. It is a lie. • Not as the world gives • Not based on outward circumstances • The peace that all mankind desperately needs • Not a promise of an “easy road” • Promise of a calm, untroubled heart, regardless of the circumstance.

Shalom: The Search is Over • Peace is found in the person Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1) • His Peace is brought with a Sword: Division (Matthew 10:34) • His Peace is inward and affects our reaction to outward turmoil (John 14:27, 16:33) • Peace is the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit that constantly reminds us that we are sons and daughters of the Mighty God and coheirs with Christ. (Gal. 5:22, Romans 8:15-17) • His Peace is beyond understanding…it doesn’t make sense to the world. (Philippians 4:7)
