  1. 1i3_12_Lee Yi Heng_Task 4 Task 4: Food Additives

  2. What are food additives? • Food additives are substances that are added to food for a variety of reasons. • They can preserve flavour or enhance its taste and appearance.

  3. What are the most common food additives? A few include: • Sugar • Preservatives • MSG • Sodium Nitrate

  4. Why do foods contain so many additives? • Food in supermarkets are produced at a large scale, and need to maintain high quality for long periods of time. Additives are added to help foods maintain high quality by slowing down the growth of fungi, yeast or mould. Additives are also added to make food look more appealing and taste better. They are also used to maintain or improve nutritional value of foods, since processing foods takes away nutrition in natural foods. This has helped to reduce malnutrition. • Additives also help in manufacturing food. For example, emulsifiers keep oil and water mixed together. Without it the oil and water would be separated, hence many products like ice cream, mayonnaise, and margarine will not be able to be made. Lastly, food additives, such as gelling agents, thickeners and stabilisers, are also used to give food the desired texture.

  5. Should we be worried about the health risks of preservatives? • We should. • Many preservatives might have some good uses about them, but most preservatives have bad side effects about them.

  6. Pick a common food—ice cream, bread, waffles, soup, etc. Find two brands of the same food—one with only the basic ingredients and the other with a long list of additives. Compare the two brands for nutritional value, price, and taste. • I chose bread. Bonjour and Sunbeam’s brands. • Bonjour's bread has 151 calories, total fat of 1.2g, 29 g of carbohydrates, 5.7g protein and 0.5g saturated fat. • Sunbeam’s has 110 calories, total fat of 2g, 26 g of carbohydrates, 5g of protein and 0g of saturated fat.

  7. Thank you!
