Student placement Jonathan is looking at TKN usability in relation to • Effectiveness – which can be measured by such factors as the percentage of tasks completed, ratio of success to failures, number of features or commands used and overall workload. • Efficiency – which can be measured by such factors as the time taken to complete a task, time taken to learn to use the product or service, time spent on errors, number or percentages of errors, frequency of use of help, and number of repeated or failed commands • Satisfaction – which can be measured by using rating scales for measuring the usefulness of a product or service, rating scales for measuring the satisfaction with specific features or functions, by counting the number of times the user gets upset or frustrated, and users’ overall perception of the information service or product in relation to performing a specific task or solving problems. Methodology • Full-text article search (20 references from BMJ) undertaken by Jonathan • Jonathan spent an hour with Lorraine McLeod of GGC to gain librarian-user perspective & also supplied with local users’ feedback • Article searches also undertaken by members of the Working Group (just Grampian so far) • Full-text article search (14 references from The Lancet) undertaken by Susan Lindner of KSG, ‘non-expert’ user. • Report to follow by 31 May

Next steps • Jonathan’s report to be circulated to Working Group • Report also to be discussed with Working Group members from KSG to identify key issues, assess options for change within current objective year, etc. • Report to inform first Working Group discussion (June) • … swiftly followed by first DDS workflow workshop / discussion (June) with last year’s Lean session in mind
