Popular Recreation Revision. • PRE-INDUSTRIAL POP REC ACTIVITIES REFLECTED SOCIETY IN WHICH IT EXISTED • THEY WERE COLOURFUL, LIVELY AND SUPPORTED BY STRICT CLASS SYSTEM • DIFFERENT CLASSES SOMETIMES SHARED THE SAME ACTIVITE. Eg Cock Fighting. • SOMETIMES HAD DIFFERENT ACTIVITES. Eg Mob football for the peasants, real tennis for the aristocracy • SOMETIMES HAD DIFFERENT ROLES WITHIN SAME ACTIVITY. Eg The bare knuckle fighter was lower class while his patron was upper class. • KEY WORDS TO LEARN: • REFORMATION, PURITANISM, COURSING, PATRON & FIND OUT CHARACTERISTICS OF POP REC FOR NEXT THURS PLEASE. ALSO DON’T FORGET YOUR PIECE OF RESEARCH ON HAMBLEDON CRICKET CLUB.

Activities In Waterfront Towns. • Summer Festivals: • Regattas, rowing, boating • Swimming, diving, water polo, bathing. • River bank activities like fishing and shooting. • Winter Festivals: • Ice fairs. Example?. Fairground stalls. • Skating/forms of ice hockey. • Reasons For Winter Activities: • Deeply frozen rivers • No work possible on the land • Held on holy days like Christmas • Held on holidays like Boxing Day. Provided entertainment.

  6. Wakes. • How did pre-industrial wakes influence and affect popular recreation? • Consider what they were, what happened there, what developed from them, who took part? • Look now at worksheet 1.4 and attempt as many of the questions that you can. You may have to guess on some!

  7. Revision Areas. • Compare the rural activities of the gentry with those of the agricultural worker. (4 marks) • GENTRYAGRICULTURAL WORKER • Consider their pursuits, use key words from this lesson! • What form did their activities take? • Did they play or were they involved in another capacity? • How organised were their activities?

Revision Areas. • Can you complete the first 4 areas on worksheet 1.5? • For pedestrianism, think who was involved, and what the races attracted? • Exam Questions: • Analyse the emergence of pedestrianism as a major popular recreation activity in the early nineteenth century. (4 marks) • In pre-industrial Britain many sports developed in river towns. Identify key features of the Doggett Coat and Badge rowing competition. (4 marks)

Research Task! • For your historical studies section in your research file you should already have information on Hambledon Cricket club and what was started there. • In addition research pre-industrial wakes & pedestrianism. • For pedestrianism remember we are interested in who was involved and what the races attracted!
