Project Summary SEEMORE introduces energy efficient transportsolutions for visitors ineight coastal regions with the goal to reduce the number of car trips made by tourists during their holidays. 2
Background •Leisure transport accounts for 50% of all travel in industrialized countries and is expected to rise •Tourist regions vulnerable, because: • Even larger share of leisure related trips • Season peaks lead to capacity problems and congestion • Trend of more individualized holidays favours private car use • Balance between accessibility and attractive naturalenvironment • •SEEMORE offers (information on) alternatives to the car 4
Objectives and main steps • Objectives: • Increased tourists´ awareness about sustainable mobility • Co-operation between the tourism and mobility sectors • A shift of tourists towards more sustainable modes • Share knowledge with other European regions • Main Steps: • Overview of good practices and set up the co-operation framework in the regions • Implementation of actions in 8 regions • Evaluation and transfer of experience to other regions 5
Expected Impacts • Increased co-operation between tourism and mobility sectors • Change in travel behavior of targeted visitors: • 5-15% reduction of car use for leisure trips • 5% increase in non-motorized leisure trips • Increase in public transport use • Inspire other regions to implement similar actions • Reduction of annual primary energy use with 796 toe/year and of greenhouse gas emissions with 2.170t CO2 e/year 6

SELECTED BULGARIAN REGION - DOBRICH Dobrich region, Bulgaria
General description of the tourist region 9 Main attractions: spacious beaches of fine golden sand, shallow sea along the beaches, curative power of mineral waters and mud baths, picturesque protected areas and natural preserved zones with rare births and vegetation, anthropogenic resources from different historic eras, rural tourism in small villages, facilities for water sports and golf, many luxury hotels, restaurants and night clubs. Relevant results and findings from the regional survey 10 Modal split among the target group The average number of day trips per year in the target area is 1400.Percentage of day trips made from tourists in targeted area by different modes of transport is: - Walking – 11 %; - Cycling – 3.5 %; - public transport – 29 %; - car – 56.5 %; - ship/ferry – 0; - others – 0; Dobrich region, Bulgaria
Relevant results and findings : Needs and preferences of tourists 11 To have more well maintained (and enlightened by night) pedestrian alleys To have better constructed and maintained bicycle paths To have more possibilities for bike rental at reasonable prices To organize electrical vehicle transport (small trains) for transportation inside Albena resort and water transport (boats) among the resorts To have more parking places around the main attractions (Balchik palace, Kaliakra Cap) To have more information about the resort areas (maps with most interesting sites) and indication how to reach them by different mode of transportation To have more information about the time tables of the PT Foreign tourists would like to have this information at least in English and, if possible, in other languages (Russian, Romanian). Local strategy developed by the project team and discussed and approved by local decision makers 12 The stakeholders fully agreed with the proposed local vision: “MORE ATTRACTIVE AND ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY SEASIDE DOBRUDZA THROUGH SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND TRANSPORT” The main goals were defined as follows: To develop a strong information and promotion campaign thus introducing the term “Mobility Management’ in the region and explaining the benefits of sustainable tourism and transport development. To introduce new mobility measures in resort areas thus linking tourism and transport sectors To increase the energy effectiveness of the transport Dobrich region, Bulgaria
SOME BEST PRACTICES IN TOURISM AND TRANSORT AREAS COLLECTED BY SEEMORE TEAM 13 1.MOBILCARD: A SPECIAL TRAVEL PRODUCT FOR TOURISTS (PROVINCE OF BOLZANO – SOUTH TYROL, ITALY) Purpose: To allow tourists to travel around the region using all means of public transport with just one ticket. Key partners: Decision makers: the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol and the System of Integrated Local Transport; funding partner: the Foundation "Südtiroler Sparkasse" (as regards the Museumobilcard). Timeframe: Initiative launched in 2006, with 2 new cards introduced at a later stage. Current status: The initiative is fully operating. After the launch of the original card, two new cards (the Museumobilcard and the Bikemobilcard) were also introduced. Dobrich region, Bulgaria
14 Description of the measure: The Mobilcard allows individuals to make full use of the South Tyrol Integrated Public Transport network with just one ticket. The Mobilcard can be purchased for 1, 3 or 7 consecutive days and gives access, among other things, to trains, buses and cable cars. Reduced fares are available for youngsters up to 14 years old. In addition, the Museumobilcard provides one admission to each of the 80 participating museums, and the Bikemobilcard allows the holder to rent a bike (only once) during the validity period of the card itself. The System of Integrated Local Transport is fully involved in the operation of the initiative. In addition to its ticket offices, all tourist offices and many hotels are operating as sales outlets for the Mobilcard and the Museumobilcard. Concerning the Bikemobilcard, some hotels and other leisure facilities will soon be equipped as bike rentals outlets. Some 80 museums also participate in the Museumobilcard initiative. Evaluations results A system to gather statistical data has been used to monitor the success of the initiative. Since its introduction, the Mobilcard has been largely successful, with a peak in sales in 2007. The use of cars has decreased, with beneficial effects on the environment.
2. PARCO PANEVEGGIO – PALE DI SAN MARTINO DEVELOPMENT AND PROMOTION OF MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT 16 Purpose: Promoting sustainable mobility in the Park and promoting the Park itself as a sustainable tourist destination. Key partners: Öko-Institut Südtirol/Alto Adige, Natural Park “Paneveggio Pale di San Martino” (co-financer), Trentino Trasporti (public transport provider, subcontractor), local representatives of the hotel and restaurant sector, the local tourist board. Timeframe: The first steps in the initiative were taken in summer 2007, and the core measures were implemented in summer 2008. Objectives of the measures to be developed: The initiative aims to adapt public transport to tourists’ needs, in order to encourage sustainable mobility within the Park and, at the same time, promote the Park itself as a sustainable tourist destination. Description of the measure: The first measure adopted was the improvement and optimization of 9 routes within the Park, with a focus on the number of stops and bus schedules. A new shuttle bus line was also implemented. The second goal of the initiative was to make public transport more attractive. This was reached by developing activities and highlighting destinations within the Park which can be reached by public transport. Cycling and hiking trails were brought to tourists’ attention, as well as the presence of several anthropological points of interest within the Park.
3. LIMASSOL SEASIDE PATH 18 Purpose: Give the option of walking along the beach of Limassol, connect various areas, hotels, buildings of the beach and create a route that compliments the beautiful scenery of the coast. Key partners: Limassol and Yermasoyia Municipalities, Ayios Tychonas, Pareklisia and Pyrgos Community Boards and the Ministry of Interiors Problems before implementation: Walking access from one end to the other of coastline was through a sandy beach, which was avoided the most of the times. Access by car was provided through a seaside road which gets busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Timeframe: The development of the walk path started in 2004 and was completed in two years. The walk path requires regular maintenance due to its proximity to the sea. Current status: It is an almost a complete walking path along but still has two gaps. Description of the measure: Construction of a walking path covering around 17 kilometers of the coastline, covering number of different municipalities and communities. It enables people to walk from one hotel to another (for conferences, events, dinners, etc.) with ease, therefore it helps reducing car use. Dobrich region, Bulgaria
4. NATURE AND CULTURE BUS, SKANE REGION Purpose: The project aims to increase the numbers of visitors to nature area travelling by bus Key partners: Municpalities, the regional transport authority (Skånetrafiken) and the department for regional development at Region Skåne Timeframe: Project time 2009-2012. Current status: The operation will be transfered to and run by Skånetrafikens in 2013.Problems before implementation: Before the scheme, public transport was not available or limited to those areas covered by the nature and culture bus in Skåne and people without a car could not visit them. Description of the measure: The Nature and Culture bus therefore was created to complement the existing public transport network with new routes, more departures and new stops to make it easier to reach nature and culture by public transport in Skane. The scheme also included marketing and campaigns about nature and culture areas. 20
5. SOFT MOBILITY CORRIDORS IN VILNIUS 21 Purpose: The initiative aimed to encourage residents and visitors of Vilnius to cycle or walk to the numerous recreational, cultural or natural interest sites in and around Vilnius. Key partners: EU funding through STREAM project, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) and the Healthy City Bureau of Vilnius Timeframe: 2006-2009 Problems before implementation: Both residents and visitors previously used their car to reach leisure destinations surrounding Vilnius. The Neris River bank is an important green corridor which goes through the city centre and connects it to the surrounding regions. It was rarely used for recreation and there were missing links between the inner city recreational sites and those outside. Description of the measures:Vilnius City developed a “Sightseeing Water Route Along the Neris River”, including the use of movable piers, in conformity with the National Tourism Development Programme for 2007- 2010. Consultation and awareness raising events demonstrated the importance of working with families and children. Also it was quite difficult to gain the support of all local stakeholders. Fortunately, Vilnius City, the most important stakeholder, was one of the project partners.
