  4. Visualize as you read. Put pictures in your head as you read. See and think about the story like a movie playing in your head. Ask questions…look for answers.

  5. Determine important ideas. Dig for important details. Dig for important information that tells you about the author’s message. Dig and determine the facts.

  6. Infer as you read. Make predictions while you read. Draw conclusions as you put information together. Reflect while you read.

  7. Synthesis and Retell Put the information together and think about what you read. Retell the story or what you learned in your own words.

  8. Remember the important elements. Characters – Who is the story about? Setting – Where and when does the story take place? Events – What happens in the story?

  9. You “toucan” identify text features. Which text features can you identify in the book? What more can you learn from the text feature?

  10. Preview like a Penguin. Look at the pictures. Read a few sentences. What do you think the story might be about?

  11. Monitor and Fix-up Think while you read to figure out when you don’t understand. Use fix-up strategies to help you understand when you are reading. (use the meaning clues, word clues, picture clues)
