  2. Map of Libya Libya lies in the Sahara desert in north Africa. Years ago it was part of the Ottoman and Byzantine empire. More recently it was controlled by the French and British. Although since 1969 their government has been ruled by Colonel Muammar Qaddafi. Their largest city is Tripoli which boarders the Mediterranean sea.

  3. Muammar Gaddafi Muammar Gaddafi was the Libyan leader from 1969 until august this year. He was born in desert near Sirte where he was raised in an Arabian tribe known as the Qadhadhfa. He was one of the very few political leaders that was not born into royalty. In 1951 he abolished the Libyan Constitution. He made laws based on ideology and what he though was correct which was call the “Third International Theory”. He started revenue in Libya by selling as much oil as possible. Which raised the living standards in Libya. He later started the e National Transitional Council (NTC) and by doing this it started the 2011 Libyan civil war. On October 20th 2011 he was killed by NATO.

  4. Demographics • Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi are the biggest cities in Libya. • Most of the population is under the age 15 • Most are Muslim • Population-6,276,632

  5. Similarities • Both had international support • Each had popular majority for the overthrow of the government • Both initially tried to remove the government • The uprising were demanding democratic reform/representation

  6. Differences • Libya was only a civil war, whereas ours was a colonial rebellion. • The king surrendered, Gaddafi was killed • People supported the upraising based on the success of the democracy in Libya. • Britain's royal family were never in danger

  8. What’s Next • I think they are on the road towards reform because the ruler is now dead, although I do not think it will be easy for them to get there so I think they may have some smaller internal disputes on their way to recovery.
