Learn how the circulatory system circulates blood and the respiratory system oxygenates it, functioning together to sustain life efficiently.
E N D
Function • Circulate blood, nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body. • Removes waste from body • Regulates body temperature
Structures • Heart • Veins • Capillaries • Arteries
Structures Con’t. • Heart – pumps blood to the body • Has 4 sections or chambers: • Right Atria – collects de-oxygenated blood (blue) from the body via the vena cava • Right Ventricle – pumps de-oxygenated blood (blue) to the heart via the pulmonary arteries • Left Atria – collects oxygenated (red) blood from the lungs by way of the pulmonary veins • Left Ventricle – pumps the oxygenated blood (red) to the body via the aorta
Note: When referring to the left and right side of the heart it is in respect to the body, not when you are looking at it.
Arteries – blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the body(usually depicted as red) • Veins – blood vessels that carry de-oxygenated blood from the body to the heart (usually depicted as blue) • Capillaries – tiny blood vessels that connect veins to arteries(this is where nutrients, oxygen, and waste products diffuse into and out of the blood)
Parts of the Circulatory System • Divided into 2 parts: • Pulmonary Circulation – takes blood from the heart to the lungs and back • Systemic Circulation – takes blood to the body and back
Function • Supplies the blood with oxygen to be sent to the cells of the body • Removes carbon dioxide from blood for exhalation
Structures • Mouth • Nose • Trachea - windpipe • Lungs • Bronchi – 2 tubes inside lungs that passes air to the alveoli • Alveoli – tiny air sacs that oxygenate the blood and release CO2 (capillaries help here) • Diaphram – a muscle that expands the lungs for inhalation (located under the rib cage)
