  25. The Aging Workforce • The maintenance and precision machining worker in manufacturing is considerably older today than in 1980 and in 2000, and has aged steadily over the past decade. An estimated one-third of the Pennsylvania industrial maintenance and precision machining workforce in manufacturing is now (i.e., in 2010) over age 50 and most will retire in the next 10 to 15 years. • Given total employment of 72,000 in the target occupations within manufacturing and retirement of a bit less than one-third of workers… total openings to replace existing maintenance and precision machining workers over the next 10 years could approach 20,000.
