  1. Fitting CPD into a busy life Jo Wood, Cafcass Librarian

  2. The story so far… • Graduate trainee 2003-4 • Library course: Aberystwyth DL 2004-6 • Chartered 2007/8 • Attended lots of training, seminars, conferences, etc. • Then…..LIFE TOOK OVER!

  3. The contents of my brain… Stress! Baking Reality TV! Washing Family Hobbies Work Husband Activities ‘Crafting’ Children (Twins) Handbags Playdates Music Shopping Friends Gossip! Me time? Ha Ha! Social Life! Social Networking CPD fits in WHERE?! Wine!

  4. The dun-dun-DEEEER moment • Eligible for Revalidation in 2011 • Work-wise I’ve got lots to include in a portfolio. • What about CPD? Could I use social networking tools for more than just ‘messing about online’?

  5. CPD constraints and a solution The problems: • Time – (see previous slide) - and I don’t even have cats! • Money – budgets are tight, not much money for courses, seminars, conferences, etc. • Inclination – what’s the point? • The Library Twitterati and other terrifying beasts A solution? • A professional development blog…that I get other people to write for me?

  6. ..and lo, Librarians with Lives was born… http://librarianswithlives.wordpress.com/ I created a basic blog and wrote a couple of posts: • Librarians with Lives – CPD for the time stretched (the what and the why) • The Librarian Crowd (the Twitterati) • What Twitter has taught me about Librarians (a tongue-in-cheek list of librarian-y traits I then posted a link to the blog on my Twitter account…

  7. LwL takes on a life of its own. • Recruited a co-editor • Set up a Librarians with Lives Twitter feed @libswithlives • 10 guest posts contributed so far, by Librarians from a variety of backgrounds and from all over the UK • CILIP accredited blog • Mentioned in Update Online (the CILIP elections) • The latest guest post was linked to by Annie Mauger, President of CILIP, on Twitter

  8. Lessons so far… • The Librarians on Twitter are the true hardcore. Don’t try and emulate – sit back, admire and absorb their knowledge • The occasional, considered comment is worth ten times more than an outpouring of inanity • Break CPD into small chunks • Read selectively – e-mail alerts, Google Reader • Social networking can be (almost) as good as a conference – build up a good virtual professional network. • Bounce ideas off fellow professionals, ideally in a social situation: lunch, drinks, etc. It’s all networking! • Commenting on someone else’s content is much easier (and quicker) than constantly generating your own • If you’re invited to join something – say YES! (you can always make excuses later…) • Get involved with CILIP – start the revolution from the inside – but do it on YOUR terms. • You can follow events from afar: ‘Event amplification’ • Keep your balance. Perspective is everything

  9. Food for thought. “Professional death starts where professional growth ends” (Bethan Ruddock, 2010) DISCUSS.
