Desktop Services Whether you are student, teacher, or researcher, your office computer helps to: • Read mathematics – Viewers, Access to expensive library materials • Explore mathematics – Maple, Matlab, R, Macualay, GAP, Singular, SAGE, … • Write mathematics – LaTeX, WinEDT, MS Office, Printers on each floor

  7. File space Three kinds, know the difference: • Local (C:\temp) – fast, “private”, transient • Profile (Desktop) – fast except login/logoff, “private” but many copies, backed up after logoff • Remote (U:\) – slow, safe, both private and public

  8. Email and Web • Email: • Address: user@ms.uky.edu • Check using IMAP at imap.ms.uky.edu • http://webmail.ms.uky.edu/ otherwise • Web: • http://www.ms.uky.edu/~user/ • PHP, CGI, etc. and fancy caching • U:\public_html

  9. Web Applications • WHS – Blackboard like system with many specialized algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistical software • Webmail – Easy way to check mail while away • Moodle – Blackboard like system used here for math. education • Misc. – We write lots of toys and tools

  10. Other locations • HPCL POT922 – high performance computing laboratory • Inslab CB311, CB313 – many desktops for classroom labs and exploration • Mathskeller – study area with many desktops for undergrad use • Ubuntu linux – alternative, pretty, fast, but less supported

  11. Getting help • Your colleagues are a great source of information • http://www.msc.uky.edu/help is the most reliable way to request help • help@ms.uky.edu is simple, but easier to get lost • Phone calls and office visits degrade service for everyone and are easily lost

  12. Common problems • Password does not work: • Two passwords, windows and unix • Desktop is almost always windows • Servers (email, t-machines, etc.) use unix • Web page does not update: • Caching for speed (web pages on safe, slow drive) • Shift-reload, Ctrl-refresh
