IU SharePoint Users’ Group BI Services Tour The Business Intelligence services offers three types of services which provide the overall functionality allowing data sourcing from the Enterprise Data warehouse and other types of database systems. BI Centers Includes site for any organization participating in the Enterprise Business Intelligence services. SharePoint centralized sites provide BI services provisioning for and support model for help desk. SQL SSAS Reports can be added to the CBI from any data source. Permits the consolidation of reports. CBI Reports Portal Reports combine enterprise data with departmental, school, or divisional data. Allows interim process to centralize data if appropriate. BI Centers provide access to the reporting tools such as Dashboard Designer and Report Builder. Provides database functionality for dimensional data usage. The reports portal for access to all the universities new reporting types. Long-term plans for the IUIE http://kb.iu.edu/data/bczv.html

  5. IU SharePoint Users’ Group BI Centers The Indiana University BI Centers are located at https://bi.iu.edu using the BI Centers dropdown menu options. These centers provide the tools to create reports. Sandbox Instance Used to plan the reporting solution(s) to plan security, scheduling, and migration process. After the planning stage, you move through the deployment stage updating and revising your plans as you test. Development Instance Used for developing the reporting solution(s). Test Instance Used to determine whether the reporting solution will meet business needs and to determine appropriate modifications before moving to Production. Define business need and requirements Determine goals and objectives Determine infrastructure requirements Define standards and procedure for reports Develop and proof solution Test and evaluate solution Refine solution Collect testers feedback Evaluate proof of concept Refine goals and requirements (Use the development instance to refine and change solution)

  6. IU SharePoint Users’ Group BI Centers Reporting Tools Excel with PowerPivot Data mash-up to process billions of rows of data using Excel. Report Builder Enhanced support for expressions, ability to subscribe and manage reports . Dashboard Designer Dashboards that provide drill through and ad-hoc data exploration functionality. Power View Enables quick and easy visualization of data while allowing sharing and collaboration. The tools provide the ability to slice and dice, create spark lines, maps, data bar, indicators (KPI’s), data visualizations, the ability to save report items (objects) as report parts, and wizards to help with the process. The tools also provide enhanced support for expressions.

IU SharePoint Users’ Group BI CBI Reports Portal The Indiana University Consolidated Business Intelligence portal provides the reports delivery and report publishing and data stewardship of all reports. Consumer Portal Provides the ability to view university consolidated reports, search, request access to reports, add favorites, share, manage personal BI, and much more. Admin Portal Data Manager Provides university Data Managers the ability to manage reports publishing and security access. Admin Portal Publishing Provides report developers the ability to publish reports, metadata, security, and request access for approval by Data managers. The CBI provides the ability to access all university BI reports and in addition lookup reports memberships and security for reports using the admin manage options features.

IU SharePoint Users’ Group BI Analysis Services (SQL SSAS) The Indiana University SQL Analysis Services Multidimensional and Tabular environment consists of a number of organizational and enterprise instances that deliver data from Oracle to the Microsoft BI tools. Enterprise Instances Includes the university shared cubes that have been highly vetted by data experts and oversight committees. These cubes contain data specific to application systems areas of interest. Tabular Provide flexible process to create data source. Permits the use of Power View. Organization Instances Reports combine enterprise data with departmental, school, or divisional data. Allows process to merge data into combined report using multiple data sources. Data sources come from combined locations. All dimensional data delivered as cubes from shared dimensions originating in Oracle. Great for quickly modeling data, high risk for quality of data in our environment. Still investigating…
