  2. Introduction • Define underserved communities • Barriers that hinder underserved communities from being vaccinated • How to apply new ideas to increase vaccination in underserved communities

  3. Definition • Underprivileged- A term pertaining to people who are deprived of the social, cultural, and economic benefits that are available to most others in their society (Barker, 1999). • Community- a group of individuals or families that share certain values, services, institutions, interests, or geographic proximity (Barker, 1999).

  4. Definition • Underserved community- A group of individuals that are deprived of essential services that are needed to enhance quality of life. • Examples of essential services include: health, education, transportation, financial and social support.

  5. Barriers • Lack of education about immunizations • Parents are not educated about the varies diseases • Parents are not educated about the risk of not vaccinating their children

  6. Barriers • Lack of Transportation • Communities without public transportation • Irregular bus scheduling • No personal transportation

  7. Barriers • Lack of Financial Resources • Minimum Wage • Time is Money • Unable to schedule time off

  8. Barriers • Lack of Social Support • There is more need for community involvement and support • Some may not have a family support network.

  9. How can we increaseimmunization rates? • Target business that can sponsor immunization outreach • Door to door outreach/Immunization Drives • National Immunization Campaign • Bring Immunizations to the children at school. • Monthly follow up phone calls • Create Immunization Coalitions

  10. Conclusion • In conclusion an underserved community is a group of individuals that are deprived of essential services needed to enhance quality of life. It is imperative that we work together to break down the barriers that hinder children and adolescents and adults from obtaining vaccinations.
