  1. The Great Survival Race:My Life as a Cheetah Ms. Chaves and Mr. Ng

  2. Who am I? • I belong to the cat family (Felidae). • I am a mammal. • I am a carnivore- flesh eater. • I am the fastest land animal in the world. I can go from zero to seventy miles per hour in just a few seconds!

  3. What do I look like? • I have a small head. • I have a lean body with a broad chest. • I have a long tail for balance. • I have long slender legs with blunted unsheathed claws. • I weigh about 130 pounds. • I reach a length of almost 7 feet. • I have a coat that is tan with small, round, black spots, and the fur is coarse and short.

  4. Where do I live? What is like? • I live in the wide-open plains or woodlands of Africa and the Middle East.

  5. What do I eat? How do I get my food? • I eat Thomson's gazelles, impala, wildebeest and calves (when I hunt with other cheetahs), guinea fowl, and hares

  6. Who are my enemies? • Lions and leopards will attack and kill me if they can. • I can’t defend my kill against packs of hyenas, lions, leopards, or even a large gathering of vultures. • Humans also like to kill us for our fur and our habitat.

  7. What is a typical day in my life? • I like to lead a solitary life. • I spend my late mornings and early evenings hunting. • Once I find my food, I must eat quickly to avoid losing my kill.

  8. Am I endangered? Why? • YES, I am one of the most endangered species! • As humans are taking over my habitat to use the land for farming, my prey is disappearing. • Many of my cubs are dying because the females can’t defend them. • Farmers also kill me when I attack their livestock.

  9. How can you help save my species? You can… • support laws to stop the sale and use of wild cat skins around the world. • help wildlife organizations and encourage governments to set up preserves. • educate others about the endangerment of my species. It’s up to you to save my life!!!
