  1. The 58th World Statistics Congress, the 6th World Water Forum, and the 21st World Water Week 16 June 2011 UN Statistics Division

The World Statistics Congress is organized by the International Statistics Institute (ISI) and a host country every two years. • Water Theme Day (WTD) is a new feature added to the traditional ISI meetings. • It will be in Dublin, on Wednesday, 24 August 2011. • The objectives are: • Highlighting the important contributions statistics can make to the solution of water quality problems and quantity challenges facing the world. • Identifying statistical research challenges that arise. The WTD provides a wonderful opportunity to promote the use of SEEA-Water and IRWS, as well as to present the “glossy” publication. 2

The UNSD and Eurostat are organizing three sessions in the WTD: • Filling the gaps: improving coverage, data quality, and institutional arrangements for water statistics (IPS91) and (IPS92). • Making every drop count: experiences with environmental-economic accounts for water (IPS93) • From data to water policy making (IPS94) • KEY PARTICIPANTS: • The head of the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) as keynote speaker. • A National Planning Commissioner from South Africa, expert from the Global Water Partnership as discussant. • Representatives from Canada, Czech Republic, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa, ECE, Eurostat and GEMS. We seek the support of the UNCEEA in order to make the Water Theme Day a success and to strengthen the dialogue between users and producers of water accounts and statistics. 3

  4. The World Water Week is organized every year by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). It is always held in Stockholm at the end of the summer. • It will happen the same week as the World Statistics Congress (21-27 August 2011). • It is an opportunity to present the “glossy” publication of SEEA-Water and IRWS. The World Water Week provides a good opportunity for building bridges between the “water community” and the “statistical community,” as well as to present the “glossy.” 4

The World Water Forum is organized every three years by the World Water Council (WWC) and a host country. • It is the most important international water policy forum. • It has been held in Morocco (1997), Netherlands (2000), Japan (2003), Mexico (2006) and Turkey (2009). • In March 2012 it will be held in Marseille, France. • The UNSD is participating, in partnership with • the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), • the World Bank, • the Asian Development Bank and • the Nature Conservancy (IUCN). • in the topic of “Promoting Green Growth and Value Ecosystem Services,” on the specific target of “Promoting Green Accounting and Data Improvement.” The World Water Forum provides a platform to establish a dialogue with policy makers in order to promote environmental-economic accounting. The process leading to the forum helps in the creation of long term partnerships with key organizations. 5
