  2. Big Ideas • Bruner felt that students were more likely to understand and remember concepts they had discovered in the course of their own exploration. • Papert felt that children could advance in their intellectual abilities more quickly with the right kind of environment and assistance.

  3. Bruner • Described development in three stages • Enactive Stage (0 – 3): Children perceive the environment through actions they initiate. Showing and modeling. • Iconic Stage (3 – 8): Children can remember and use information through imagery, decisions still made on basis of perception. • Symbolic Stage (8 +): Children begin to use symbols and better understand mathematical principles. • Benchmarks to measure cognitive growth.

  4. Papert Two Concepts • Discovery learning and powerful concepts. • Children should be able to teach themselves., and need great flexibility to develop their own powerful ideas. • Logo and the “microworlds” concept • Is graphics presented • Allows children to see cause and effect relationships and this makes possible “microworlds”
