  1. Soul Refreshing: • Every soul has an empty, restless, greedy longing inside. (continuum) • David was in the desert when he penned these words, Psalm 63:1, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

  2. Soul Refreshing: • “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:13) • St Augustine, “Thou has made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee”

  3. Soul Refreshing: • Only the presence of God can satisfy the eager, greedy, restless longing of our souls. Ultimately in heaven we will be fully satisfied. On earth we must access His presence. Think of His presence in three ways.

  4. Soul Refreshing: • First, God is omnipresent. David says in Psalm 139:7f, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

  5. Soul Refreshing: • First, God is omnipresent. • The omnipresence of God is comforting, but it does not satisfy the eager, greedy restless longing of our souls. • Second, there is the manifest presence of God. God’s presence is revealed. (1 Kings 18 – The Lord, He is God) (Lisa – grief; healing; filling) (Acts 2)

  6. Soul Refreshing: • First, God is omnipresent. • Second, there is the manifest presence of God. Acts 2:2f, “Suddenly a sound like a blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

  7. Soul Refreshing: • First, God is omnipresent. • Second, there is the manifest presence of God. • The manifest presence of God satisfies our souls. But, we can’t make God manifest His presence. We can pursue Him. We cannot produce it.

  8. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. We aren’t manufacturing it. We are becoming sensitive to the presence of God, increasing our awareness of the presence of God within us. The Holy Spirit now dwells in us. We can become aware of His presence (Br. Lawrence)

  9. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. 2 Cor 3:13-18, “We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.

  10. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. 2 Cor 3:13-18, “But, whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

  11. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. 2 Cor 3:13-18 • We no longer just have access to the omnipresence of God, or the occasional manifest presence of God. We have access to the continual presence of God through the Spirit within us. So, we aren’t like Moses. We don’t have to come in & out of the presence.

  12. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. 2 Cor 3:13-18 • We must learn how to cultivate His presence. (e.g., like a walk in the woods – birds, trees, flowers, edible plants) • We can cultivate a keener sense of His presence by spending time with God. (practices – Celebration of Discipline; Spiritual Pathways)

  13. Soul Refreshing: • Third, there is a cultivated presence of God that is accessible. 2 Cor 3:13-18 • We can cultivate a keener sense of God’s presence by learning what His presence “feels” like. (e.g., peace; love of God or love for people; tears; trembling; joy) • The eager, greedy, restless longing of my soul finds rest in God.
