Types of Relationships • Parent • Your first relationship was with your parents • Sons and daughters that get along well with their parents tend to have good relationships with their spouse • Siblings • Often leads to competition and jealousy • Positive sibling relationships lead to positive peer relationships • Peers • Romantic • Work

Qualities Needed for Positive Relationships • Mutual Respect • Each person regards the other with honor and esteem • Trust • Having confidence in other people, keep secrets, do not encourage bad behavior • Reliability • If you say you will do something, do it! • Openness • Feeling free to share thoughts and feelings (people cannot meet your needs if you do not express your needs)

  4. Dating The factors that attract people to friends also attract them to dating partners. Dating teaches you lessons that prepare your for marriage. Shows men that all women are not like their mother and shows women that not all men are like their father.

  5. Dating • Group Dating: A group of people of both sexes go out together. • Easy way to get to know people and begin dating. • Random Dating: casual dating, allowing people to date more than one person at a time. • Steady Dating: exclusive, dating only one person.

  6. Love vs. Infatuation How can you be sure it is love? Could it be infatuation?

  7. Love Love involves caring more about your mate than yourself. Love has a realistic view of the person’s strengths and weaknesses. Love is selfless.

  8. Infatuation Infatuation is an intense feeling of admiration. In a relationship infatuation is short lived. Usually ends in boredom. The surest sign of infatuation is that it is self-centered. (A person being concerned about their own desires and feelings) You can be infatuated with someone you do not know or someone you barely know

  9. Can you fall in love? People fall into infatuation, but rarely fall into love. More than likely you will grow into love slowly as your learn about the other person.

Responsible Relationships • In a steady relationship its only natural that you will want to express your affection • Teen hormones become active/body changes • Strong sexual urgeslead to pressure for sexual relations • It is important to know where you stand on this topic • Some teens are pressured into a sexual relationship even though they are not ready • Why?

  11. Responsible Relationships • If you give into sexual relationships… • Feelings of shame and guilt • Feel used rather than loved • Compromises standards, priorities, and morals • STDs can occur (some are life threatening) • Pregnancy may occur

  12. Facing Sexual Decisions • Sexual Abstinence: a choice to refrain from sexual intercourse until marriage. Why choose abstinence? • Morals • Believing sex is only for marriage • Health and safety • STDS; Pregnancy is dangerous for teen mothers and the child • Personal integrity • Having self-esteem; having goals you want to meet

  13. Showing Affection in Other Ways Talk about your lives, your hopes, and your dreams. Be there to listen Complement each other Go dancing Hugs and kisses (NOT AT SCHOOL..ew)
