  6. GOAL SETTING TIPS Most important thing • The goals you set belong to you- not to your parents, not to your teachers, not to your boss, not to your friends. OK, Once Defined… Now identify the skills you have to achieve those goals. If you’re not sure what skills you’ll need, do some research. Try the library, a gudance counselor, teachers, and other people.

  7. GOAL SETTING TIPS Goals can be turfed They’re not written in stone. Goals exist to get you closer to your preferred future. If your goal becomes something you no longer want, you can change it, rearrange it, or just plain dump it. Know what’s in your way Identify the barriers to getting your goals. Lack of money? Time? Your attitude? Write down the barriers and consider ways to overcome them.

  8. GOAL SETTING TIPS Don’t get swamped With a big, long-term goal, break it down into achievable steps, and set those steps as short-term, “doable” goals. Stop and Congratulate yourself Acknowledge your movement forward and appreciate how far you’ve come. Hire a band and give yourself a hand.

  9. Smart Goals • Goal Setting • Can vary widely depending on individual athlete. • Need clear idea of that one wants to achieve in order to achieve it. • Objective goals • Empirically quantifiable (e.g.-breaking time barrier) • Subjective goals • Outcomes harder to quantify (e.g.-be a better player) • S.M.A.R.T. Principle • Specific – able to be precisely defined • Measurable- able to be quantified • Attainable- within an athlete’s limitations • Realistic- attainable within constraints • Timely- achievable within a set time frame
