  2. Introduction • Vertebrates are animals with backbones and a spinal column. • They include the majority of the phylum chordata. • They include from amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds. • Invertebrates lack a backbone and spinal column. • The defining characteristic of a vertebrate is the vertebral column, in which the notochord(a stiff rod of uniform composition) found in all chordates has been replaced by a segmented series of stiffer elements (vertebrae) separated by mobile joints (intervertebral discs, derived embryonically and evolutionarily from the notochord).

  3. Evolution Of Vertebrates • Vertebrates originated about 525 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion.( Set diversity) • The earliest known vertebrate is believed to be the Myllokunminiga. • All these early vertebrates lacked jaws, and relied on filter feeding. • The first jawed vertebrates appeared in the Ordovician and became commen in the Devonian.( After the Mesozoic is when they became known.)

  4. Examples of Vertebrates • Baldeagle • Cats • Rattlesnakes • Dolhpins • Humans • Mice • Etc……..

  5. Scientific Classification • Kingdom: Animilia • Phylum: Chordata • Clade: Craniata • Subphylum: Vertebrata

  6. Etymology • The word vertebrate derives from the latin word vertebratus (Pliny), meaning join of the spine. • Closely related to the word vertebra, which refers to any of the bones of segments of the spinal column.

  7. Interesting Facts • Even though most snakes are invertebrates, Rattlesnakes are considered vertebrates. • There are approximately 52,000 species of vertebrates. • Vertebrates include the largest animal to exist on the plant. ( Blue Whale) • Amphibians became the first vertebrates to live on land. • Hagfish and Lampreys are the only remaining jawless fish in the world.
