    1. Compound Sentences 1-7 p. 52

    2. So far we have studied only simple sentences. A simple sentence has a subject and a predicate and express a complete thought. Sometimes two simple sentences can be combined into one sentence called a compound sentence. The simple sentences are joined by a comma and a connecting word like and, but, or or.

    4. Do not confuse a compound sentence with a simple sentence that has a compound subject, a compound predicate, or both. A compound sentence has a subject and a predicate on each side of the connecting word.

    5. Which sentences are compound sentences? Which are simple sentences with compound subjects or predicates? What is the connecting word? 1. Ancient people in Peru made long lines, and they drew huge pictures of animals. 2. Oversized images were drawn, but they are a mystery. 3. Some lines are forty miles long, and some pictures are the size of two football fields. 4. Dirt, rocks, and stones were cleared from a dark layer of earth. 5. A sandy layer showed up clearly, and it still shows today.

    6. Write each compound sentence and underline its two simple sentences. If the sentence is not compound, write not compound. 6. Ancient people drew these pictures but probably never saw any of them whole. 7. The pictures are seen best from the air, and now people take photographs of them from airplanes. 8. Are the markings a calendar, or do they mean something else? 9. Most of the pictures are in Peru, but other countries have some too. 10. Scientists have studied these pictures, and many books have been written about them.
