Objective: • To determine how mutations can affect the survival rate of a species
Materials • 3 Sheets of paper • Scissors • Lab Write up
Procedures Part 1 • Create a paper airplane. Try to design an airplane that you feel will fly the furthest. • Go to the hall test fly your plane. • Record your data in your lab report and on the white board next to your name.
Procedures Part 2 • The plane that flew the farthest distance will be reproduced by the class. • Once you have reproduced the airplane, add a variation. • Your variation must either take ?cm off the front or the back of the plane. Measure and write in data table. • Go to the hall and test fly your design. Record your data on your lab report and on the board.
Procedures Part 3 • The best plane design will then reproduce passing on it’s traits. • Create a new variation by trimming ?cm off each wing. • Go to the hallway test fly your new design. Record your data in your lab write up and on the board.
Analysis • In this case of evolution what caused the airplane to be ”fit” for this environment? • Looking at the most “fit” plane design why do you think this plane flew better than the other offspring? • For all the “unfit” planes what happened to their genes over the generation? How does this relate to real life natural selection? • What sources of error could there be in this experiment?
